The Science

What Science Says About Mindfulness & Meditation

Before you try something, it's reasonable to want to know if it actually works. Happily, science is finally catching up to ancient wisdom, and the results are in: Meditation & Mindfulness work. They are tools that YOU can use to reduce depression, improve your health (both mental & physical), enhance your performance, and just generally be happier.

The number of randomized controlled trials involving mindfulness has skyrocketed in recent years from only one in all of 1995‒1997 to 11 from 2004‒2006, to 216 during 2013‒2015.

In April, 2018 the Harvard Gazette published a story showing that meditating can cause actual, physical, changes in the amygdala resulting in a reduced stress-response in regular meditators exposed to emotionally charged images. This is in addition to research showing that these tools can be used to treat conditions such as depression and fibromyalgia.

In October, 2015 Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital found that practicing relaxation-response techniques (such as meditation and yoga) could reduce the need for health care services by as much as 43 percent.

The University of Westminster found in a 2014 study of CEOs that Vipassana meditation-training significantly enhanced overall self-confidence, as well as inspiring a shared vision and demonstrating moral intelligence.
